NYC’s Bronx Zoo

New York City isn’t exactly known as the go-to destination for nature lovers, but those nature lovers are in for a big surprise when they visit Bronx Zoo. With over 600 different species of animals and a plethora of exhibits and rides, this lustrous gem tucked away in concrete and skyscrapers is sure to delight the kids and bring a breath of fresh air to your NYC vacation.

Located in the Bronx borough of New York City, Bronx Zoo is the largest urban zoo in the world and is an easy drive to make when you rent a car from Edge Auto Rental. This 265-acre zoo plays home to a unique and colorful cast of characters in diverse habitats including an indoor butterfly garden, African plains exhibit, baboon reserve, and many more.

Feeding Frenzy

Just as with people, you can learn a lot about an animal from its eating habits. Bronx Zoo has several opportunities to view different animals during their favorite part of the day – feeding time! Upon visiting the zoo, make sure you know where the feedings take place to ensure you make it there on time.

At 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Astor Court and Sea Lion Pool, you’ll have the chance to join the zoo’s noisiest residents, the California sea lions, for a meal.

If you catch the sea lions at 11 a.m., then you’ll have plenty of time to walk around before heading to the World of Birds exhibit to witness the daily “Bee Eater Buffet” at 2:45 p.m.
The Bee Eater Buffet features white-throated bee-eaters, the zoo’s own aerial acrobats. See the birds swoop and glide through the air as they gracefully pick off unsuspecting crickets from above.

You’ve now dined with the sea lions and marveled at the skyward feats of the white-throated bee-eaters, so now it’s time to cozy up to everyone’s favorite aquatic bird for a nice cool dessert – penguin feeding time is about to begin.

Over in the Sea Bird Colony, penguin feeding starts at 3:30 p.m. Penguins are a natural draw at the zoo and a favorite of many children. These birds may be awkward on land, but watching them masterfully traverse the water for a delicious fish is a real sight to see.
